When a WIN isn’t exactly a WIN WIN

On the surface, it looked like I had a massive WIN last week. Not first prize but one of 20 runners-up. A double pass to a conference I wouldn’t mind casing but on reading the fine print, the prize only covered $1,000 and I still needed to come up with almost $700 in order to ‘cash in’ on my prize.

The winner, I believe, not only received complimentary tickets but accommodation as well, which is what would have tempted me to enter the competition, that came across my feed on Facebook, in the first place.  I must admit, I didn’t really look too closely at the terms and conditions or the fine print, just the big picture and prize and went for it.

It was only after receiving what I felt was the slap to the face runner-up ‘winning’ email, that I produced my magnifying glass and decided to look more closely at the fine print. Something, I think we should all do before entering a lot of online giveaways. Especially ones that ask for an excessive amount of personal information or where the prize seems too good to be true.

Thankfully there is nothing spammy or gimmicky about our latest giveaway this week (WIN: Spanish Film Festival tickets) and hopefully we can all say the same for everyone linking up this week. I know I’m going to have a lot of fun casing and entering all the fantastic giveaways on offer.

Have you ever won a competition, only to discovering the prize wasn’t as great as you first thought or you ended up on a telemarketer’s call each and every day list? Do you take the time to read the terms and conditions?

  1. If I feel a competition entry is too invasive or asks too many questions, I just don’t enter! The funniest prize I ever won – Mum and I both entered a raffle at my stepdad’s work Christmas party or some such. I won a bottle of rum, she won a fancy doll. I was about 11 at the time. Needless to say, we swapped!!!

  2. I’m confused as to how I enter! Do I just leave a comment here? Am I supposed to wait for people to put up their links and then follow them? My brain hurts…

    • This is the place for business and bloggers to enter their giveaway links, pop back during the week and click on all the links to enter. I’ve already included the link for my Spanish Film Festival giveaway, so click on the link and enter there. More giveaways will be popping up soon as the link has only just opened.

    • Thanks Jody. Do you find the time to enter many competitions? I must find a way to link up some of the ones I’ve found on Instagram. They are usually pretty easy to enter and have some fantastic prizes.

  3. I won something useful … (the sunbella) on your blog last year thankyou raych!
<3 it and you! cheers to you! love m:)X

  4. Yes – I’ve ‘won’ a couple of competitions like that. Very disappointing. The others are competitions that are more information gathering exercises. I’m a bit wary of entering these days unless they are run by people I trust.

    • I’m much the same, although throw a half decent holiday as a carrot and I’m in. I’m planning on highlighting a few freebies as part of the giveaway link each week as well but those ones will be well cased before they hit they blog.
