JASPER JONES

The story of Charlie Bucktin, a bookish boy of 14 living in a small town in Western Australia. Shot in Australia’s South West and adapted from Craig Silvey’s best-selling Australian novel, Jasper Jones features a stellar cast including Toni Collette, Hugo Weaving, Levi Miller, Angourie Rice, Dan Wyllie and Aaron McGrath.

In the dead of night during the scorching summer of 1969, Charlie is startled when he is woken by local mixed-race outcast Jasper Jones outside his window. Jasper leads him deep into the forest and shows him something that will change his life forever, setting them both on a dangerous journey to solve a mystery that will consume the entire community.

In an isolated town where secrecy, gossip and tragedy overwhelm the landscape, Charlie faces family breakdown, finds his first love, and discovers what it means to be truly courageous.

Jasper Jones in cinemas from March 2nd.

  1. I don’t think our cinema is affiliated with anyone offering free tickets. I remember years ago having passes to see something and there was all sorts of confusion about them.

I haven’t read this book but received a copy recently as part of the re-release so must get to it soon! #teamlovinlife

  2. I just saw the shorts for this movie on TV last night and it immediately attracted my interest. I would love to go along and see it, even for the beautiful scenes in South West Australia. #TeamLovinLife

  3. Thanks to everyone that has entered so far. Due to having to tighten security for comments, most of your comments that include links and #hastags are heading straight to our spam folder, awaiting approval. Rest assured we have all comments and will approve in bulk before the competition ends.

  4. I’m definitely one that prefers to read the book first before seeing the movie. Unlike most people that read this one at school, I haven’t read this book. The trailer looks great and I love Toni Collete.

  5. prefer to see the film first,it’s a time thing and usually if the film adaptation is a good one it has a better understanding of the story than i can get out of a book

  6. I’m happy either way. I think the books were better in 50 shades and I wouldn’t have been so keen to see the films without having read the books first. I haven’t read this book but going on the trailer alone, I want to see the film.

  7. Don’t read the book first, I groan.
Firstly watch the movie of JASPER JONES.
Not knowing the twists and the plot,
The conclusion bound to be spellbounding and hot!

  8. In theory, read the book first, but given I’m such a slow reader (like sometimes I actually make little marks at the sides of pages next to phrases I really like – ugh) and there’s so much else to do in the day, that’s a high and mighty preference I rarely practise. If I did I’d never get to go to the movies, and I LOVE the movies. And I have actually read Jasper Jones, so now I feel I really should catch the movie. Luckily I have a memory live a sieve and usually forget the crucial details in any case and am just as likely to as spellbound and surprised by endings as anyone else!

    • I wonder how close to the book the film is? I’m not going to have time to read the book before I see the film on Sunday but I’m taking someone with me that has read the book, which should be interesting.

  9. Book first, to get the true and accurate story as played out in my mind’s eye to the descriptive words of the writer. Then the movie, to see what they’ve embellished, omitted or straight out changed to try and make it a blockbuster. For me, book is always better, and I put that down to my very over active imagination.

    • Interesting. I suppose a book would need to be compelling for it to be adapted into film. I also think a lot can be lost in translation in the film adaption. I won’t have time to read the book before seeing the film on Sunday but I’m taking someone that has read the book.

  10. I would say I’d LOVE the read the book first, but since I dont have much time these days, i’ll probably bypass the book (Sorry book) and catch it at the cinema!!!

  11. I love reading a book before seeing its adaptation in a movie – it gives you a wealth of background knowledge and insight into the characters that just cannot be fit into a 2 hour movie. However, reading a book before-hand can also make you distracted in the movie as you notice the differences instead of paying full attention to whats going on in the screen. Ultimately though, if I have a chance to read the book before the movie, I will take it as it makes you a lot more invested in the movie!

  12. The film, because if I love the film, I will read the book. Sometimes the book is different to the film and this can deter from your enjoyment of the film if you have read the book.

  13. I always prefer to read the book first, then when I see the film I can compare my imagination to how the creators and producers want us to see. Sometimes the two perceptions are worlds apart, so much it’s like a whole new storyline to me.

  14. What a great prize!
I usually prefer to read the books first. I get so much out of a book and then (usually) the movie enhances it. However, when it came to Twilight, I was disappointed in the first movie compared to the book. Luckily the remaining movies redeemed it all …
But yeah, if the book is in my sights I’ll read it before heading to the movie.

  15. I much prefer books. Life is so busy that its not often I’ll get to watch a whole movie from start to finish in the one sitting. A book I can read a page at a time and I’m excited everytime I open it to get myself a bit more of the story. My parents on the other hand love going to the cinema together. Now retired, they try and do a fortnightly movie date. Its so cute. I get to hear stories of how they laugh together and sometimes cry as they give me a critique after each movie they see. I’d love to win these tickets for them. Gotta support Aussie films too.

  16. My wife much prefers to read first, but I prefer to have the voices and faces for the characters in there before I read the book. It also means the film isn’t ruined for me by missing important parts out from the book!

  17. I love to ‘COLLETTE’ books.
    Love movies, I’m hooked.
    JASPER JONES the plot thickens.
    Beats reading Charles Dickens.
To the movie I’ll watch first.
Love going out, have a ‘social thirst!’

  18. The book, as I get too impatient and often read the last page first then potter back and forth through the book in case I have missed things, not so easy to do that with a film.

  19. I prefer to see the movie, if its good I’ll read the book. Then there is no let down because the book is normally even better.
